Roland Garros Benefits From Lama’s AutoMix Solution

An AutoMix solution was introduced by Netherlands-based software startup Lean And Mean Audio (Lama) during this year’s French Open at Roland Garros.

The tournament was broadcast by Eurosport across continental Europe from 21 September to 11 October.

Lama AutoMix is an intelligent software tool that gives broadcasters the ability to combine multiple audio signals and automatically create a well-balanced mix.

Signals from commentators, international sound and video sources are mixed in real time into a single output that meets industry standard levels.

AutoMix provides flexibility for broadcasters which are often required to increase and decrease the number of audio feeds.

For events like the French Open that have commentators speaking various different languages, the allowance for multiple concurrent feeds is necessary, but once the event is over, the number of feeds need to be scaled down quickly and easily.

AutoMix was vital in satisfying Eurosport’s scalability requirements, as it can run on any standard computer hardware with an ASIO driver.

Furthermore, it has been optimised to run on virtual machines (VMs) using Merging Technologies’ Ravenna/AES67 driver, further building on its flexibility and scalability.

The company said that VMs offer more efficiency, as they require less space and maintenance costs are lower.

The flexibility of using AoIP in the software also allows for multiple inputs from various locations, meaning commentators do not have to be in the same booth or even the same location, an essential factor to bear in mind with Covid restrictions in place for the foreseeable future.
