Grammys 2022: Jon Batiste wins big; Zelensky delivers powerful address

The 2022 Grammy Awards took place last night in Las Vegas, with winners including Jon Batiste, Silk Sonic and Olivia Rodrigo.

Batiste was the most-nominated artist with 11 nods – on the night he won five, including the prestigious Album of the Year award for We Are.

R&B superduo Silk Sonic, composing Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, took home the Grammy for Song of the Year for their single Leave The Door Open. Doja Cat and SZA meanwhile won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for the collaboration Kiss Me More, with Doja Cat almost missing the award as she rushed back to the stage from the toilets.

Earlier in the night, Lady Gaga received a standing ovation after her performance of Do I Love You from her joint album with Tony Bennett, Love for Sale.

Other memorable moments on the night included a shock win for comedian Louis CK, Billie Eilish performing in a T-shirt bearing an image of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who recently died suddenly aged 50, and a powerful pre-taped video message from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

"Our musicians wear body armour instead of tuxedos," he told the audience. "They sing to the wounded in hospitals, even to those who can't hear them. But the music will break through."

He urged musicians to "fill the silence" left by Russian bombs "with your music".

The video message was followed by a performance by John Legend of a new song, called Free. The US star was joined on-stage by Ukrainian musicians Mika Newton and Suzanna Iglidan, while a poem was read by their compatriot Lyuba Yakimchuk, who recently fled the country. At the end of the track, viewers were given the details of a charity helping Ukrainian refugees. He ended his video message by saying he hoped his countrymen and women could soon "be free like the people on the Grammy stage".
