Daft Punk Announce Split

Daft Punk have announced their retirement after nearly 30 years of making music together, breaking the news in an eight-minute video titled Epilogue.

Their longtime publicist Kathryn Frazier confirmed the news but did not elaborate on a reason for the duo’s split.

In Epilogue, musicians Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, dressed in their iconic robot costumes, bid each other farewell in the desert, before one of them self-destructs.

Formed in Paris in 1993, the group brought the French underground house scene into the charts with hits like One More Time, Da Funk and Around The World.

Their debut album, 1997’s Homework became a dance music landmark.

Later on, singles like Better, Faster, Stronger cemented them as household names, and they scored a worldwide hit in 2013 with Get Lucky, featuring Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers.

Daft Punk wore ornate helmets and gloves to assume robot personas in most public appearances since 1999 and rarely granted interviews or appeared on television.

Since Get Lucky, the band have kept a relatively low profile - although they collaborated with The Weeknd on two tracks, Starboy and I Feel It Coming, in 2016.
