Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts dies aged 80

Legendary Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts has died at the age of 80.

For almost 60 years, Watts served as the rocksteady heartbeat at the core of one of the world’s most influential and iconic rock ’n’ roll bands, where he was widely regarded as one of the best drummers go his generation.

Watts’ work provided the rhythmic framework for some of the biggest rock hits of all time, establishing the band’s status as one of the most important to emerge in the 1960s with tracks including (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, Sympathy For The Devil Jumping’ Jack Flash and a great many others.

His death was announced via a statement late this afternoon (August 24), just weeks after it was confirmed that he would not be able to participate in the Rolling Stones upcoming US tour dates due to an unspecified medial procedure. The statement from the band’s publicist said that “he passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family”.

He is survived by his wife Shirley, daughter Seraphina and granddaughter Charlotte.

Leading figures from across the music world have been paying tribute to Watts since the news broke.

Fellow drummer Ringo Starr tweeted: “God bless Charlie Watts, we’re going to miss you man, peace and love to the family. Ringo.”

Singer-songwriterJoan Armatrading wrote: "Why am I crying? Because Charlie Watts has died. Who knew that any of the Rolling Stones musicians would ever leave this earth."

“Charlie Watts was the most elegant and dignified drummer in rock and roll,” said Joan Jett, “He played exactly what was needed - no more - no less. He is one of a kind.”

Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson wrote: “I’m just shocked to hear about Charlie Watts. I don’t know what to say, I feel terrible for Charlie’s family. Charlie was a great drummer and I loved the Stones music, they made great records. Love & Mercy.”

Duran Duran tweeted: “So saddened to hear about the passing of Charlie Watts . An absolute inspiration to a legion of drummers since the 1960s. A man of grace, style, dignity and composure.”
