LD Systems Live Sessions: Blvck Viølet perform ‘Home’ at Darkwood Studios

In this fourteenth LD Systems Live Sessions, powered by Headliner, Blvck Viølet perform their beautiful original number Home live at Darkwood Studios, St. Albans.

The RnB pop duo from Dorset, comprising Harrison Walker and Sam Hurst, are performing through an LD Systems MAUI G3 rig and MON 15 A G3 Stage Monitors, with lead vocalist using an Earthworks SR117 condenser vocal mic. Headliner caught up with the duo after the performance to find out more about their collaboration…

How did your musical partnership come about?

Sam: How did we get together? Well, Harrison was going to put on a gig for his final uni project, and he needed a support act. He asked me through a mutual friend of ours, because he recommended me, but Covid happened so we couldn’t do the gig. So instead, Harrison asked me to hop on a song which is called Riding. We got on a little facetime together to sort out the music video and all of that, and then it turned out he wasn't living too far from me at the time.

So I was like, right, I'll hop in the car and go down to the studio. Originally we were writing songs for me, writing songs for him - for his solo stuff and my solo stuff. And then we were writing so much material that we just thought, let's create a duo, and here we are. It's been fun, and the rest is history.

Could you provide some background on your original track, Home?

Harrison: Home is just a kind of love song. Sam and I tend to write a lot of sad happy songs about our personal experiences. This one only took us about half an hour to write. Initially we didn't even sit down to write a song; we were literally sitting in my lounge with the guitar just messing about and it came really quickly. We are both in nice, healthy relationships, and at the time of writing it was all quite new. So the song in its essence is about our partners, really.

Sam: Our songs sound happy, but if you really deep the lyrics, most of the time they're quite deep and meaningful.

How did you find performing through the LD Systems rig?

Harrison: The LD Systems rig today was lovely. Sonically it was pretty sound. Obviously we perform live fairly often, and compared to a lot of other PA systems, it's above the mark for sure. So I would absolutely recommend it. We would use it again, and if we had it in the locker, we could set up our own gigs and do a lot of stuff with it.

Sam: It sounded crispy. I could hear you [Harrison] well, so it was nice to be able to harmonize with you, and hopefully you could hear me well so you could harmonize with me! I think it's a cool system.
