Rebecca Black Releases ‘Friday’ Remix

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the viral pop star Rebecca Black’s first music offering, Friday, which was certified RIAA Gold earlier this week, the artist returns with a new remix featuring an array of electro-poptasm.

The remix, produced by Dylan Brady of 100 gecs, is buoyed by vocal features from the worldwide ambassador of Bounce music, Big Freedia, who expressed “yasss!” when asked to participate in the track; pop music agitator Dorian Electra, who featured Black on her 2020 release, Edgelord, and honoured her in the lyrics, “[a song that] defined an era, and changed the music industry;” alongside house party favourites 3OH!3.

Friday has this accidental campiness that was a part of making it what it was, and through the years, camp has been something I’ve only further tried to embrace,” said Black.

“I’d had the idea to do this remix of Friday for years leading up to now but honestly it was also mildly insane for me to think anyone else would want to be a part of it. As I started talking about it with other artists and producers I couldn’t believe how stoked people were about it. I am thrilled to have some of my favourite artists (and people) as a part of this moment.”

The video, directed by Weston Allen [100 gecs, 3OH!3, Dorian Electra] adds further campiness: reimagining her status in the 2010s zeitgeist juxtaposed through a hypnotic, futuristic universe which sees Black’s iconic car shot matured into a technicolour drag race between herself and Dorian Electra, with the track’s new Gold plaque in the front passenger seat.

In 2011, a then 13-year-old Rebecca Black’s song, Friday was viewed by over 150 million people worldwide and became the fastest-growing viral song and video in 2011, ranking No. 1 on YouTube, Billboard’s Heatseekers chart, and the Google Zeitgeist.

Later that year, Black's viral fame, positive attitude and charismatic personality landed her the surfboard for Choice Web Star at the Teen Choice Awards, a sketch performance at the VMA’s, and she completed the late night and daytime TV press circuit in the US.

Black continued her mainstream climb with a cameo in Katy Perry’s music video, Last Friday Night, while Friday went on to be covered by Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, Justin Bieber and Fox TV show, Glee.

After taking several years away from music to build her online presence and YouTube channel that currently amasses over 1.4 million subscribers, the now 23-year-old singer-songwriter has returned in a big way with the release of new music, including the latest singles Anyway, Sweetheart and Closer.

Black has embraced her teenage hit and has never feared speaking about her experiences. Instead, she has become a prominent advocate for anti-bullying and the LGBTQ+ community and has worked alongside organisations like the AdCouncil, GLAAD and Best Buddies.

Black plans to release a new project in 2021 starting with lead single, Girlfriend.
