Iconic Moog Music Etherwave Theremin returns with a raft of major upgrades

Moog Music’s iconic Etherwave Theremin is back with a raft of new upgrades aimed at improving its precision, portability and playability.

The new Etherwave Theremin is a distillation of the Moog Etherwave Standard and Etherwave Plus Theremins that have been industry standards for the past 25 years.

The Theremin is a unique instrument in that it is played without any physical contact – it is controlled by the player moving their hands in the air in the proximity of two metal antennas. One of these antennas determines pitch and the other determines the volume. Higher notes are played by moving the hand closer to the pitch antenna, while louder notes are played by moving the hand away from the volume antenna.

This new iteration of the Etherwave Theremin is centred around preserving Bob Moog’s theremin circuits to retain the core characteristics of the originals. It does, however, build on that initial design by adding improved bass response and stability in the lowest registers; updated antenna connections for quick assembly and easy removal for travel; quick-release mic stand adapter for attaching and detaching the instrument from mic stands; mute control for setting the instrument into a standby mode or used for ‘pitch preview’ via headphones; and CV output integration from Etherwave Plus (Gate Out, Pitch Out, Vol. Out) for connecting with other modular, semi-modular, and Eurorack synthesizers.

In addition, Moog has designed a custom-fit, tear-resistant Etherwave SR Series Case with padding and storage space for safe and convenient transport.

Available at $899 USD, the Etherwave Theremin is now shipping.
