Enter the competition at the bottom of Headliner Hub’s piece on recording live vocals, and be in with a chance of winning a DPA 2028 vocal mic worth £500.

The 2028 vocal microphone is designed for the unique challenges of live stage performances. It is a flexible handheld vocal mic which provides transparent vocals to performers from a wide range of markets including live, HoW, broadcast, and many more. Use it wired or together with your favorite wireless system; either way, just plug it in and hear the vocals shine.

The voice is the ultimate instrument – and no two are the same. This means that often, when you come to record vocals, aside from the fundamental dos and do-nots in any recording process such as keeping a clean signal on the way in, going easy on EQs, and so on, there is no one ‘correct’ way to do it.

It’s about the vocal performance just as much as the sonic setup and the singer’s mic technique, and keeping it simple will usually garner the best results.

Headliner worked with four London-based emerging artists: Molly, Dotty, The Last Morrell, and ARC – all very different sounding, vocally, and in their musical style. We recorded them live, using the same microphones, with very limited processing, and captured those performances on film.

Here’s what the artists said:

Molly: Soul/R&B

"The DPA 2028 mic is probably the best mic I have ever used for live performance - it's so crisp, clear sounding, and true - and the recording really captured that..."

Dotty: Grime/Rap

"After hearing my voice back on the live recording, I was really surprised; I have such a deep voice, so it's important to capture all of the dynamics, and the 2028 definitely did that..."

The Last Morrell: Pop/Rock

"I felt the crispness of the top end really shone through; for live singers, a mic that can handle those sparkly highs without feeding back is a huge bonus. The 2028 is very well balanced - a really beautiful sounding microphone..."

ARC: Folk/Acoustic

"The clarity of the 2028 was amazing, especially when we were singing a cappella; it felt really smooth, which is really exciting when you are performing, and actually we found using this mic improved our live performance..."
